it isn't one of Wilson's better works of his film adaptations I've seen.
The actors were/are all capable well beyond the material.
On a positive note, the production values were top flight...

Follow Ups:
it's got the Black Panther in it who died young ...
and courageously actually
so, expect Oscar nominations
haven't even seen it yet, but I'm Carnac The Magnificent on this stuff

and they all get the maximum they can out of their roles.
Plus a bit more.
Boseman was an excellent actor and this role would garner just as much attention if he were still alive.
It's tragic he isn't, but it's the perfect Hollywood/celebrity legacy performance.

You hit that one on the head.
Saw it month or so ago. My lovely bride liked it more than me. It wasn't bad but it would've been a far better play than a movie. The acting far outstripped the material. So nothing others haven't already said.
I will see it asap ... Viola Davis is said to give her best, and as you say, then some ... there was a short made in 2007 about a Ma Rainey song
involving the love that dares not speak it's name ... 'ribald' might be a mild description ... rather surprising to be honest
best regards,
