I almost never think any of the best picture nominees are actually "best" movie during my year...but I enjoy the hoopla anyway.
I did not warm much to Everything All at Once, I loved Avatar but strictly because of visuals. Banshees was cool and weird, but "better" than all those others? Not really. If I pick off the list, I pick Tar, which is a real immersion into classical music as well as a great role for Blanchett, and a not bad character study.
My one real happiness from this list is the nomination for Paul Mescal for Aftersun. Of course he won't win, but this was one of my two clear favorite movies last year (the other was RRR), and he is remarkable as the young father.
Follow Ups:
I was ready to bail. I think the Academy is catching Asians up after decades of being ignored.
catch the whole thing one day but, not soon
