This a high-drama story of photojournalists struggling to cover the violence of the civil conflict. Dunst is among the team of reporters who are zig-zagging the country trying to get to D.C. They encounter various unsettling scenes of Americans turned on Americans in the most vicious ways. The Jesse Plemmons segment is by far the most chilling that is actually frightening. When the SUV full of journalists reaches D.C. we finally see a combat situation.
Too bad this film is early in this year's cycle as I think it needs Academy considerations.
Again: This is not battlemaps, large battles, North against South Civil war. This is brutal reality captured by journalists.
Follow Ups:
What's scarier than a clown after midnight? Rednecks with guns. Ie, Plemmons, and the gas station boys.
The Guardsmen or Reservists chomping at the bit to "capture" POTUS can be frightening, too.
The final assault finally struck a chord. What if that was for real? What if people were killing the shit out of each other to get inside the WH to get at the prez? 50 years ago I might have catawalled "Yeehah". But now, it makes me sad.
Oh well, Yeeeeehaaah.
"Due Dissidence" consists of two political commentators whom I regularly watch - they're not film critics. They don't like everything, but, ultimately, they give it two thumbs up:

The best reviewer on You Tube.
It will probably do fine during awards season. Yesterday RT had it at 82/82. Today (one day later) it's 82/77 . . . an actual audience seems to be less enthralled than reviewers. A couple of professional reviews I've read have noted that European cultural gatekeepers (director here) love to portray the U.S. as a hotbed of political and social anarchy, chaos and budding fascism and yet historically it's Europe where this actually occurs. Projection or cautionary warning? I'm curious about it but am not sure I'm ready to make the investment in money and esp time in something so downbeat. Maybe we'll get the real thing in a few months anyways . . .
At no time was I rooting for one side over the other. There was a reliance on "good ole boys" as rebels. Plemmons takes the prize there.
In IMAX format. It was much better than I expected but left me emotionally drained. I'm still digesting it so not much to say just now but what a roller coaster. The Jesse Plemmons scene was chilling and strangely plausible. Reminded me of parts of Apocalypse Now. Also chilling to me was the scene where the journalists were in that quaint, seemingly unaffected town. Clerk in a store says it's best to not get involved so they don't there . . . Except they obviously do get involved. The taking of the white house was intense as it gets and reminded me a bit of pvt Ryan opening. And the young journalist effectively becomes the old seasoned journalist. Obviously a big part of the budget was spent there.
I'm guessing there will indeed be some awards for this one. Kirsten Dunst?
