(spoiler? who cares?)
Okay, I got the premise. Something happened and "the Zone" became an area where strange things happened. One must get past security troops to enter and tread lightly to visit a "room" that can allow the visitors their most desired wish once you leave the Zone. So....
We spend over two hours watching them mince towards their objective exchanging intellectualisms and insults while creeping, crawling, and taking unexplained naps while surrounded by water. They finally reach the "room" which brings on more intellectualisms, scuffling, and an attempted bombing?
Suddenly, we end with a young child at a kitchen table doing a psycho-kinesis thing and FINI!
So, that's entertainment?
Who will champion this celluloid wreck and give it meaning?

Follow Ups:
I've seen five of his films, and "Stalker" was the only one I didn't care for. My wife, however, liked it the most of all his films, with "The Sacrifice" being a not-so-close second. She fell asleep twice trying to watch "Solaris", yet was riveted to "Stalker".
She's not Russian, and I have no idea why she liked it so much. The only thing I can think of...she is a big fan of fantasy films.

The novel movie based on is not a mile-long. It's written by brothers Strugatsky, and is outstanding read.
Movie has very little in common with the book, both in contents and spirit.
Movie basically borrows a very general outlines of the the "Zone " idea,
and some characters. Stalker, the main character in the movie, couldn't be more different from his literary protagonist "Red head".
I could never understand the movie, and I'm a big fan of Strugatsky's.
Tarkovsky himself is a different story, better saved for another occasion.
I watched "Mirror" again recently- it is not bad, but IMHO is pretty far from being a staple of the cinematograhy. Same statement, multiplied by 10, applies to "Stalker" as well.
I'll usually eat at a bad resturant two or three times just to make sure.

OK, OK, No more watching Tarkovsky's movies. I promise.
I think VK made me do that (watching "Mirror")
