I actually felt like I accomplished something after watching the "short" 3 Hr 8 Min version, then the Criterion commentary version for another 3 Hrs.
Whew, this is certainly a gorgeous-appearing movie with childhood wonder and magic sparkling about. A bit, eh, boring in the first half, but hey, this is Bergman..
Follow Ups:
accepting of "boring" no matter how lauded the director.
If it's a boring film, tell it like it is.
Hard to see how such a film can be appreciated, liked, and praised for decades.
Perhaps a bit of snobbery here (not you but those who find such films so interesting)?
I loved Fanny and Alexander from start to finish and declare myself to be one happy-go-lucky snob!
*Spoiler Warning*
What do you make of the Ishmael character? Fascinating second half overall; I do wish Bergman would have cut a little more from the first half and expanded some more on the second half..
...to answer your question.
