I have been without a laserdisc player since my Pioneer CLD-79 bit the dust about a month and a half ago. I just replaced it with a CLD-95, one of Pioneer's best Elite line efforts before they started dumbing down their product with inferior parts and separate CD drawers. The (analogue) picture and sound on this player (it can play digital tracks as well) are simply stunning and quite compelling to watch/listen to. Like the difference between lps and CDs, there is something about an analogue laserdisc picture from a quality in tune player that is very involving despite its video "noise" and a certain "fuzziness" when compared to DVD. In addition, a few of the last LDs to be produced have Dolby Digial sound which, given the larger LD real estate, is even better than the 5.1 on DVDs (I have directly A/B'd the two). So even though my laserdiscs are worth absolutely nothing I still treasure them. And with my Dolby Pro Logic II codec the stereo sound tracks have added new life.

Well, uh, I suppose it can be argued that DVDs are a digitation of an analog source (film, except in the case of some recent Lucas and other digital outings) but deep down I think you knew/know eactly what I meant.

i have a marantz lv510 - love the look and sound of the laser discs - plus, they are available for very little - my local rekkid store has a huge selection - new and used - most are 3-5 dollars! even criterion editions!

I feel the same way about my Pioneer Elite CRT Rear Proj set. I give up some HD sharpness, but the blacks, contrast, colors and brightness still puts most digital screens to shame in overall image quality.
When you're circling the drain, it doesn't really matter whether you're spinning to the left or the right.
Agree. I watch on a 51' SONY RPTV calibrated by the chief ISF guru. It does do hi def as well, however.
I wasn't clear. My Pioneer is HD. I've seen other sets with more absolute sharpness, but not with overall image quality.
