Not a studied discourse, but just a nod to an exciting chase film. BEAUTIFUL to look at in 1080p (and 24 frames?, still some flicker vision). Acting passable, I saw no racism, since there were good and bad people in it. I would have liked the addition of an obvious scene at the end of the Europeans putting the two chasers into chains as slaves. Aside from the absurdity of the badly injured man outrunning the 6 well fed perfect health specimens, just a good exciting movie with some cheesy CGI.
Follow Ups:
You didn't even mention all the dismemberment and scourging. Weird.

Is it just me or are there still 3 or 4 bad guys after 3 or 4 of the six are killed during the chase?

I'm finding the light criticisms of this movie really bizarre.

Hmmmm.
I'm supplying a link to a review of Apocalypto in which the reviewer reveals his identity foundation/prejudices early on but does not let said issues colour the critical thinking and insightful reasoning he brings to his review.
An aspiring critic such as yourself who is struggling with an inability to put aside personal issues when confronted by content that conflicts with your viewpoint could learn a lot from Maurice Broaddus.

...the writer slips into the common fallacy of criticisiing a work of art for not being what he wants it to be, rather than what the creator intended: "...with the hope that the audience will be satisfied with the story of a family man who wants to get home." Well geez Luiz, that's the story! The film was engagingly picaresque, in the sense of "episodes that depict, in realistic detail, the everyday life of the common people."

I agree, especially about the exhausted, wounded escapee so effortlessly outrunning his healthy pursuers. I've also bitched that Gibson blew a singular opportunity to use a fascinating Mayan backdrop for something more than another of his trademark gorefests.
When you're circling the drain, it doesn't really matter whether you're spinning to the left or the right.

Mel is very conservative....He may be a Bush supporter.
We could say the sacrificial pyramid showed the nonchalant, carefree royalty (government) quite content to blood-slaughter its citizens (soldiers) in a predestined defeat of their efforts to save their foods tocks (oil) against the unbreakable drought (war and overconsumption).
And, the Indian's escape represents the challenges of Obama's run for election.
Is that liberal enough, I wonder?
