I know everyone here hates my "partial" reviews but its a swell movie for a gloomy Sunday morning. I am about 15 minutes in, and there has just been a JAW DROPPING plot twist (the white envelope) and it was so well done I had to post here. This thing really avoids the danger of becoming a Lifetime Channel movie for TV with STRONG performances by Costner and Heard. The negative, the daughter character acts 12 when she is in her first year of college, AND the music is WAY too prominent, played on synthesizers, it sounds like the theme from Ironside. This movie is impossible to discuss the plot without giving away the inner workings of the movie, so I will just say it is a mystery about a serial killer, with some novel twists.

When the white envelope's purpose became clear, I let out a groan.
No $$ blackmail?? Instead he wants to...urgh.
Also, what about the continuity error? Costner says his daughter told him she had lent the car to a friend to drive cross country; NO SHE DIDN'T!! She said a friend was driving it up the next day, that's it. The rock music during the dream sequence was distracting. Mr. Smith horribly overacts. Whoa, roller coaster ride down to a B-.
Who'd a'thought that stuff was genetic or that many people kind'a, wanna do that?

that was a great dramatic device, even if it has been done before. I REALLY liked the gun oil scene.
When Hurt was doing all the talking.....did you notice how smart Hurt was about things?
One of the few, if not first times, I've liked Costner. Non-Costners should see this.
