My introduction to Tarkovsky with "Stalker" did not go so well, so much so that I'm afraid to try any more of his films. Boy, when I saw Clooney's version of "Solaris," I thought that was rather slow-paced for Sci-Fi but still liked it. I have a feeling I won't be able stay awake through the original...

Stalker? Is that the one where the opening shot zooming in on a guy on a cliff takes about 10 (yawn) minutes?
You may have started with the wrong film. Granted, all his films are slow, but "Stalker" wasn't just slow for me...I just didn't get into it. I've seen five of his films, and it was the only one I didn't like.
Mirror was almost as cryptic, but it worked for me on an emotional level, even if I didn't fully understand. It was visually awesome at times.
Try "The Sacrifice", filmed on Faro, with Sven Nykvist cinematography, so the most Bergman-like of his films. If it doesn't work for you, then it's probably time to throw in the towel!
I like films that make me work a little (or even a lot) but not if the work is futile.
Next week I'll be seeing "Ivan's Childhood" for the first time.
