...worthy Chinese films I've recently seen: "Blind Shaft" and "Unknown Pleasures".
They don't quite rise to the level of "Platform" but they do offer a gritty, realistic perspective on unique subject matter that is fresh to my eyes, from Chinese film.
Tin, I would love to see the new Brazilian offering you mentioned elsewhere. Do I need to contact you privately to make that happen?
To compensate you I'll list all the movies I've watched lately, with brief comments. That's the best I can think of at the moment.
"Uknown Pleasures," and "The World." This last one, I think, surpasses the earlier "Platform."
Are you familiar with Thailand's Ratanaruang? His "Last Life in the Universe" is a must-see.
I'd also highly recommend just about anything by Taiwan's Tsai Ming-Liang, especially "Rebels of the Neon God," and "What Time is it There?"
If you haven't yet experienced "Memories of Murder" by Bong Joon-Ho, you should. It's a thinking man's "Silence of the Lambs."
I'd very much welcome your film reviews.
I'll get the Brasilian satire off to you. Be warned: it's vitriolic!
(BTW, I found "Blind Shaft" superb and I'd not place the very different "Platform" above it).
To bad I can't enjoy them again for the first time. I think "The World" is the only one still in queue.
Actually, "Last Life...." is due for repeat, as well. Lot of unanswered questions in that one for me.
Thanks again for the opportunity to see the new ( to me) Brazilian film. I look forward.
