Following Tinear's asking me for my favourites, I thought I would throw it open, or save myself some work as it is sometimes called.

violent, and depressing?
To visit England, as I have very recently, is to see a country thriving economically (ahead of this country and pretty much every other one in the world), with world-class infrastructure, and a quite happy population.
If you compare soap operas, what you find is that generally US soaps are about the love lives of rich business people, British soaps are about the problems of working class people and Australian soaps are sunny.
make sure and put English subtitles *On* as the London accents and muttered lines can be impenetrable; otherwise this is a stellar film

I consider Stephen Frears one of the great contemporary directors, and although he continues to get great projects to direct he doesn't appear to get the kind of personal attention other superior directors get. Maybe he doesn't care. It's hard for me to think of anyone else who has made such a consistent string of interesting, high quality, thought-provoking, and unique films.

Excellent!
"Breaking the Waves" in that regard. Another fine movie.
