No, I am not done, as I am switching players, and my new player (HD A20) will not play it. But I got thirty minutes in on my Toshiba 6980 and it was BEAUTIFUL to look at, and a great story of Wilber Wilberforce who fought slavery in England. Did you know England had slavery? They did. Acting excellent all around, even the bit parts are well done. And as amazing the color and cinematography as Excalibur or Delicatessen. The young woman whom he is fortunate to be setup with is very spicy and nice to look at.
Follow Ups:
I saw it last October at the Heartland Film Festival in its NA "premiere". Apted there to answer questions. I thought the DP did a marvelous job - haven't seen the DVD yet but it was gorgeous in the theater. The set designers and art director did a great job tto - not too grungy, not too precious. It looks...real.
One of the chief virtues of this movie for me was that gathered many of my favortite British actors into one production. I've been a fan of Albert Finney and Michael Gambon for years and years, and I love Ioan Gruffudd and Rufus Sewell who - alas - seldom gets a decent role in Hollywood flicks but is quite gifted and striking. (I had the great pleasure of seeing Sewell on Broadway back in the '90s in Stephen Friel's Translations - WOW.) I am becoming very fond of the young actor who played Pitt, Benedict Cumberbatch (wotta name). He was terrific in another period piece last year, a BBC production of To The Ends Of The Earth.
The core of Amazing Grace the movie - the struggle of a man of conscience to advance social justice within from within the political system - is still timely. Then as now it is all too easy to become discouraged with the nitty gritty of poitical life and withdraw from public service.
One should point out that England was the first country to have put an end to slavery.
had done it first. The way it was done made a GREAT suspense point. I really liked this movie and absolutely beautiful;. I kept thinking "Boy this HD is really great" and then realized it was just a PAL standard DVD disc. What colors!!! Similar to Excalibur in it s beauty. GREAT ACTING ALL AROUND. The last ten minutes had a few "pet the puppy" scenes that felt manipulative, like "Rocky", and the friendship between Pitt and Wilber sometimes seemed a little too friendly. A good solid A-.
Unfortunately.
If you go to Bristol, where a lot of slave ships docked you can still see Black Boys Road and other remnants of this despicable trade.
:-) joke
I will check it out in March when we are there for the Zombies.
... they never got your family Dui!
Hey, enough people take the piss out of both of us!
you can see a lot of the old slave plantation mansions have the same ( Greek columned ) architecture as Bristol, ( like the Bank of Scotland building in Clifton )T'was the *same* people built 'em!
Had a beer at a pub in Bristol that was Blackbeards local ( but that's a whole other story... )
