did we watch the same movie? The two boys are laying very close to each other and talking about how they will miss each other, etc. The fat one makes "moon eyes" at the other when they leave the mall with different girls. Every kid I know who saw that movie recognized it.

The looks they gave each other as they went their separate ways, each with a girl, I believe were meant to convey the sense of "the friendship as we have known it has now changed for good--ie the girls"--just as they feared it would next year when they went to different colleges. No teens I talked to interpreted the ending the way you did.
