I was underwhelmed despite the 3.5 stars, but it was fun to see the excentricities of some of the inhabitants of the murky world of "Classic" video gaming.

Film was too long and Jack Black was miscast, just compare him with
1933's Robert Armstrong. Great effects and action, acting by KK and
Naomi Watts. In my collection, although I cringe at Black's pathetic
performance at times. ~AH
The movie ended announcing that Chris Wiebe had the Donkey Kong record over Billy Mitchell as of Fall 2006.
According to the TwinGalaxies Web Site, they have changed places again, with Billy now holding the record and Chris 1100 pts or so back on a video tape refereed game.
Billy Mitchell was portrayed in the movie as pompous, arrogant and unlikable: Weibe as the likable loser who finally won big. These characterizations were probably primarily to make what could have been pretty dry more interesting, and likely have little basis in fact.
I think if I had gone in really completely cold, knowing nothing about it, I would have been blown away. Just finding out people still compete at Donkey Kong would have been weird and funny.
But I found that out, along with much else, from all the hype I heard before I saw it. Including interviews with Steve Weibe, etc.
I confess I used to be a pretty serious Pac Man player in bars. I could play for about 1/2 hour on a quarter. Not anywhere near the league of these people in the movie of course.
But I had natural interest in the subject matter. And as the reviews said, the people are fascinating. I felt for the guy who has to verify all the records. Watching all those tapes...what a way to spend your time.
I liked it a lot. The dramatic arc held my interest from start to finish, and it's not a long movie anyway.
Read review about it, but didn't go see it.
There are a lot of movies that come to the art house theaters that are kind of like special extended episodes of "Dateline NBC" or "20/20." Some of these I go see, but some of these documentaries are interesting but not really entertaining.
Back in the early 1980s, Donkey Kong (the original game) was my favorite video game. I don't play games at all today, but I marvel at the incredible hand/eye coordination of the top players. A pretty useless hobby, but interesting nonetheless.
LOL you guys.
I'm talking about the newly released to theaters Sundance documentary about tournament classic video game play (Donkey Kong)
