Quite liked it. The ending seemed to suggest a sequel. Anyone feel the same.
Follow Ups:
I hated the fact that he turned out to be a cop. David Cronenberg of all people doesn't need to resort to this type of catering to the audience. In the end, he really wasn't ambiguous at all. I thought History of Violence was much better. I really like his movies, I've seen most all of them. This would not be among my favorite, although it is strong visually, as one would expect.
...but I doubt it anytime soon.
Good film, and Vigo is fantastic in it. I was a little less happy with Naomi Watt's part, which seemed rather underwritten and she seemed dimmer than was absolutely necessary. especially after the strong female role in HoV. I think I need to see it again.
But this still takes its place as one of the best gangster films.
History of Violence and now this - Cronenberg's on a roll.
These are two films that explore nothing beyond what you already know going in. Implausible setups in order to depict gruesome acts of violence. No character development, no scene development, and barely a plot in either. Eastern Promises fails from the start due to the movie's complete reliance upon the stupidity of Anna. And just who is this fearsome crime family, the leader of which does nothing more lethal than simmering borscht? Both films may be as effective as "300" in calling out the salivating hunter in men, but they represent some pretty weak filmmaking.
If you're comparing these two films to 300, then you are nuts, and can keep them on your roll.
