This is truly a masterpiece of man at war. Beautiful cinematography contrasting nature against man's violence. Hearing the thoughts and wonderings of the men invovled and seeing the cliches of their humanity all painted a complete portrait of the fear and futility of man's most awful activity.
The attack on the Japanese encampment was one of the best choreographed scenes of combat ever put on film. The simple but effective score along with the near chaotic dance of death between the overwhelmed enemy either begging for life or making futile lunges at dying in combat is awe-inspiring by showing all men are equal at the end.
Many folks before have said the film is filled with cliches. The folks that say that have never looked at life very hard--where do cliches come from--everyone's life. Many say the film is too slowly paced--this I felt at the big screen. This film requires one to shake the ants from his pants and get introspective.
This film just gets better with age. SPR and other don't. TRL is a mystical war film floating above harsh reality.

Follow Ups:

I got it for 5 bucks at Wal-Mart.
Too much talking and not enough killing.
I liked Nick Nolte.
Did you meet yer buddy Cooter in Nam??Was it a lonely, dark night far from home in a damp cramped fox hole and his toothless smile reminded you of yer moms?

Terrance Malick's other movie from recent times? I absolutely love his style of movie making. It has a dreamy, wandering quality.
TRL is one of my favourites as well.
Cheers. Doug
I just didn't relate to it like TRL. TNW did not get released in our market here in the swamp. It was heavily previewed but never distributed. I'm sure the "regional nobs" probably thought folks would walk out saying WTF and decided not show it.
Being a vet, I began to think about the images and thoughts and it made it a lot easier to relate.

... even if it didn't seem to get the big audiences here.
Yes, it is exactly what you would imagine, but is that disappointing?
Not for me.
It has the reverence for the
natural" world and the inevitable "fall" when the white man comes written through it.
But the opening had me rivetted as... well, if you have seen it then you know how it starts.
I liked it and am thinking of buying it.
Despite recent trends, I like to see films in the cinema. But I buy sparingly and hardly ever rent a DVD. In fact I don't belong to any rental store.
strike a chord with many viewers. It didn't take me four viewings to appreciate it, but I'm glad your perseverance has paid off.
I've heard that it was radically cut down from an immense amount of footage. Reputedly, Adrien Brody's character had a larger role.
But I don't think we will ever see all this extra footage, unfortunate or not. The theatrical version stands on its own.
I enjoyed Hans Zimmers' soundtrack so much that I purchased it as well. It is HDCD, for the audiophile inclined.
Perhaps Jim Caviezel's best role, eh?
Hans Zimmers' best work for me and some of tracks struck a chord within me when i was going through a difficult period and used to seek solace in alpine area.
I've always like TRL too and overheard a few viewers' disappointing comments on the way out of the theater a few years back, stating it's too slow and not exciting like SPR.They don't get it and i appreciate T.Malick not dancing to the typical blockbuster way of film making and founf TRL worth repeated viewing.
