... and I would place "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" on the list instead of "The Life of Brian".
Python's scathing satirical take on the Arthurian legend and psychology surrounding the English "right of kings" is a subject they seem closer to.
Follow Ups:
...it was directed by an American, Martin Ritt, not a British/irish director.
There is a certain school of thought that Life Of Brian is a more cohesive script and film than Holy Grail, which according to this wisdom is still abit too sketch-like...but I agree the Pythons were never funnier than in HG.
If they could include Antonioni, Ang Lee and Fred Zinneman they certainly could've included Martin Ritt.
Sheesh.
Although not exclusively British, many of my faves have been international efforts such as "The Great Escape" (John Sturgis), and "Barry Lyndon" (Stanley Kubrick) -- films sadly missing from the list, albeit by American (global citizen) directors.
These and films like British director David Lean's "Doctor Zivago", and "Lawrence of Arabia" have helped me form an appreciation of Britain and the human condition.
The error is mine alone if I thought these quality films British, as art rarely thrives in a vacuum -- except valve art of course.
