Edith Piaf was born in 1915.....she recorded it much later as evidenced here....

No doubt, you are right! It is always the same, you are raised with the inner assurance that something belong to some one, like a twin brother to...And you discover that it is not like that.
So now who sang this song the best....
I've been defending my love for her since I was 13....It's no different now @ 52...this song from On A Clear Day sealed the deal for me.....for me she will always be the best...she has never been the most technically/pitch perfect singer....but NO ONE delivers the emotional impact of song better IMO....
As a kid I did not her voice at all, I found her old fashioned and nerving.
Much later, it stated with Funny Girl I get use to her singing and then it came..I loved her voice and her " Papa can you hear me..." and many songs.
Now I prefer Piaf for that particular song, too bad I could not find it on the net...Mon Homme...
