(2 disc standard version, street date 10/23/07):
The film has an overall softer look, more film-like than previous versions. The colors, especially the pastels in the opening ape sequence, are far more vivid. But, alas, the rear projections now LOOK like rear projections, something I don't recall in theatrical showings. Overall, this version is the best so far. It features anamorphic video and 5.1 sound.
The commentary by astronaut stars Keir Dullea and Gary lockwood is sadly lacking in focus and insight, particularly during the sequences not featuring themselves. The six featurettes on disc 2 are well done and informative and I learned some things from them I didn't know. The packaging is also very handsome, a major improvement over the previous video incarnations. If you are a fan this is the definitive version to own (again, I'm writing about the standard DVD version, not the hi def ones).
Follow Ups:
Edge enhancement, over sharpening, wrong gamma, spacial and temporal compression artifacts...... oh no, could this mean....... Bring back Laserdisc!!! But seriously, was there a decent Laserdisc release of 2001? I'd loved to have seen a good PAL print on LD- Ian.
Rear projection and blue screen content oftens sticks out like a sore thumb on tv media.

The price of HD. Seriously. I'm not sure I will ever get used to seeing every pore on people's faces in close-ups. They did a joke on HD TV on The Simpsons, with the children screaming in horror when they saw Krusty's hagard face in every detail.
I've noticed it for years on DVDs; the CGI portion in a picture is often apparent like it has different gamma or contrast values.

My ISF guru friend says that both this and the new HD version retain the edge enhancement problems that have plagued every video transfer so far. Of course one has to have the best there is system to see it!
