Long.
A two-disc dvd set.
Raskolnikov's friend, mother, sister, her two courters, and the inspector: all superb.
Sofia, the street prostitute, however, was over the top in just about every scene: it's a wonder her face didn't have creases in it from all the bending, squashing, and pushing it underwent.
Ultimately, the film fails because the direction is so bland as to remind one of a tv version (perhaps it was?).
I was reminded more than once of Bresson's masterpiece, "Pickpocket," about another alienated young man who justifies criminality for the same reason: it's a superior film.
Out of five-stars, ***.

Since you are plowing through the rather interesting field of Russian films, try to locate any works of the following directors:
Eldar Ryazanov
Yuri Mamin
Pyotr Todorovsky
arrival of Pt 1 to begin.
I have a Ryazanov film on the queue coming up very soon, Rail Station...
I also tried to watch Vengeance, which I think takes place in Georgia, but it just was too strange and I gave up.
You probably mean Railway Station for Two... lovely film. Look for whatever you CAN find of that director, he is very good.
Do not expect much of the Cadets.
An OK film, a nice vehicle for the guy who plays Porfirij - Innokentij Smoktunovsky. If you like him, try to get "Beregis' Avtomobilia", a delightful and warm comedy.

was terrific in C&P, as was the young actor that portrayed Rodion.
I, of course, genuflected to Smok's performnace in "Hamlet."
Thanks for the recommendations, I'll check Netflix.
I have several dozen Russian films on my up and coming N'flix list, having gone through perhaps a dozen and a half already.
I'm having a wonderful time but the Russian national personality is very hard to understand, really unlike European, American, Asian, or any other reference points.
I really wish you'd see The Second Circle. I think you may find it's the one film of that director you'd like.
I added it to the queue, although I will have to make my wife heavily drunk to allow me watch it! :)
