It's been quite a while since i've seen it, so I may not even know the difference between the original or director's cut. I want to add it to my dvd collection. These 'director cuts' can be a funny thing though. I despise the Blade Runner Dir. cut(i know many will disagree), but I thought a key scene was added to the Dir. cut of Stargate. A bogus music scene was added in the version of The Abyss, but a great scene was left out of the original T2. I can go back and forth with this, but more times than not, I find myself saying during those dir. cuts "GEZE! NO WONDER that cut that part out". A lot of times I just think it's director's arrogance, and they feel they should fix something that isn't broke. We fell in love with these movies the way they were. Gosh, I hope my wife doesn't come back in a few years with a director's cut of herself "this is the REAL me, not the one you married and are happy with"
Follow Ups:
for its impact, appreciate the Director's cut for more detail, monotony, and fatiguing terror, and have yet to see the uncut 5 hour version.
Each seems a different view of the same storyline -- Rashomon anyone?

The first Amazon reviewer seems to make good sense IMO. Also, I too am always disturbed when a full screen film is clipped to create wide-screen.

full frame is fine if it's SUPPOSED to be in full frame, and the same for wide screen. You should see more to the left and right and reduce panning in wide screen, not remove the tops of peoples heads.

so in this case, the director's cut is the shorter theater version? I don't think i've ever seen a 5 hour movie, wow.
Hardcore....
The mischievous Second Officer is given a silly high-pitched voice that changes his character into a clown. For the veiwer the film is laborious to watch but compelling because most people never knew how incredibly difficult life on a fully laden U-Boat was.
