yes, for high school boys that like soft porn with their films and to be spoon fed "the message," I'd agree with you.
Actually, I think some of the tedious riding along the delta could easily have been edited down, too. One needn't be bored to understand the feeling.

  For me it was as though the playmate scene was some weird trip in a giant outhouse -- mud, rain and no way home on acid -- apocalyptic reality of persons completely at the end of the road with no means available?
  
  Concur completely about the plantation/(French history-lesson) scenes.
