A nerdy amateur entomologist goes to the seashore to look for a new species and is captured and held captive in a sandy prison, his only companion being a woman resigned to her fate.
To gain food and other necessities, the couple must work together in what appears to them is a nonsensical enterprise, the shoveling of sand.
I think this is a much cleverer evisceration of modern life than anything Bunuel ever did.
The new dvd is--- horrors!---the director's cut which I think ill-advisedly extends the film an additional 1/2 hour.
Still, it's not to be missed. The actor also stars in another vitriolic attack on society, "Hiroshima, Mon Amour" and is terrific.
(warning to grits: there are no car chases, barroom fights, explosions)

and that was long overdue for DVD release too; what took them so long?
Dunes held up really well over time, pretty much in a category of it's own
Love it to bits and own the Japanese VHS of the theatrical release, so I'll be interested to see how much extra sand stars in that added 30 minutes

...just what I look for in masterpieces!
I didn't mean, of course, that it was JUST clever but satires are by nature, clever. Is not Jonathan Swifts's, "A Modest Proposal," exceedingly so?
...I realize that others don't necessary view the concept of "cleverness" as I do. To me it's superficial and simulates real intelligence with trickery. But that's just me. I really didn't mean anything serious by it.
