"Enchanted."
Disney is back!
It takes the clichés of the genre and, without cynicism, makes them new and fresh.
Amy Adams breathes real life into a character that is, well, cartoonish. She is going to be a superstar in the Nicole Kidman, Naomi Watts mold.
Patrick Dempsey, as the "real life" love interest, shows that he's an actor who successfully has bridged that difficult tv-film chasm.
Did I say "good?"
Nah.
Make that "very good."
Follow Ups:
... before they went away the first time. :o)
- Unfortunately, this trailer doesn't do the film justice because the story is as much about the family and times (WWII) as the Water Horse itself. (Open in New Window)
I will see "Water Horse" 'cause the kid liked it and Mom did, too.
By the way, have you ever seen the series, "Avatar: The Last Air Bender?"
Damn good. (Nickolodeon)
The reviews of Enchanted have been quite good although it has only been a modest draw at the box office (it has made over $100 million, but by today's standards that's just average). The ads made Enchanted appear somewhat campy and silly, too slapstick for most folk's tastes, I'm guessing. However, judging from your impressions the trailer and teasers may have done this film a great disservice from a marketing perspective.
Sorry about the change-up; my mention of Water Horse wasn't intended as a thread crap. The reason I brought it up is that this film turned out to be much better than expected, exemplifying those very qualities that you mentioned. Unfortunately, Water Horse isn't doing great box office, so if you seriously want to catch it I'd suggest doing so ASAP.

No, but that's only because we rarely watch anything on Nickelodeon. I'll try to catch it though.
Cheers,
