Golden Compass. How come no one told me it never ends?

Literally and figuratively? I was so irritated by the poor acting, script, and story that the only thing I was looking forward to by the end was to see an ending of some sort and leave the theater.

Then I found out this movie abruptly ends. Part II will be coming.

I thought it had been fairly well publicised that there would be a follow-up movie to complete the story.
