If it really happened, the judge who allowed it was insane. It clearly violates rules of ethics, and trial conduct, where the jury would be confused if the detective was telling things he really knew or just advocating for the DA's office. Absurd. And very odd that the detective would agree to do that, and then represent the gangster??????????????????

... why a cop who was actually honest (even if imagining an honest cop might be harder!!) would want to become a defence attorney, but why then did he take the job in the DA's office?
The story about becoming a defence attorney would seem more interesting than the story as shown in the film.

say is not evidence is just their opinion of what they hope to show with evidence, which will be witnesses, exhibits, and possible stipulations. Was he going to call himself as a witness?
