The wife and I rented this with 3 nieces on the weekend. I thought the movie was quite entertaining actually. I didn't find myself wandering off as I do during some movies.
Keira, although not quite at her hottest, was, well, hot. To my eyes she's one of the hottest actresses out there. My wife and the girls (12, 15, 17) said that Orlando Bloom was also hot in this movie. I don't see it but then I don't go that way :) (his name doesn't exactly help the image). Nor did I see him being a blacksmith; a blacksmith the size of PeeWee Herman? Depp seemed over the top to me, but it does seem he was supposed to be that way. The story however kept me entertained, to me that's the bottom line. Some day soon we'll have to rent the second one.
I'd give it a 3 1/2 - 4 out of 5.![]()
Follow Ups:
Both sequels are overlong, over CGI'd and are completely devoid of the humor and charm of the first film. I can't believe I was suckered in to seeing At World's End after the disappointing first sequel-I yawned and looked at my watch a lot.
I remember being really surprised at how entertaining POTC was...not at all what we expected. POTC II was almost as good. We just saw III last week and its was not so hot.
Being Irish, he had an abiding sense of tragedy, which sustained him through temporary periods of joy - WB Yeats
.
Do yourself a big favor and forget the follow ups.
It's all downhill from there, dos and tres are pretty much awful, WAY too long, completely convoluted story lines (and lines and lines and lines) and boring. I can forgive most anything except boring.
The first is quite enjoyable and a very entertaining film. Geoffrey Rush was, as always, fantastic. I'm surprised the girls weren't more fond of Depp; every female I know from 8 year olds to early 60's swoons over him.
My wife may be the head swooner...
"...You're all welcome to stay for the next set...we're going to play all the same tunes, but in different keys..." -Count Basie
...wasn't that bad was it? I walked out on (II) -- a rarity for me.I liked III's style searching with existential "wating for godot" ("boring"?) trippy episodes that finally put the series to rest. Their CGI effects are getting almost tolerable with every passing decade.
All in all, not too bad for a (post Walt) Disney amusement ride.
