it can do strange things to you....a character steeped in evil would be especially difficult when you live it 24/7.....Nicholson was very effective in the role previously and I have always suspected that it is because there is some evil subtext in his personality...we've seen it before..."here's Johnny"....as just one example....he was able to step away from it....Heath it would seem was possibly not able to distance himself from it.....it's a shame really...I had been watching Ledger's career and I've really admired his work....he took risks as an actor....it would have been easy to have made a career of playing the "pretty boy" but he took HUGE out-of-the-box risks with Brokeback Mountain and The Dark Knight and played against type and was effective....

and some do it better than others. It is simplistic bullshit to imply that actors are shallow, or don't know themselves, as some of the more shallow and simplistic have said here. Same for the idea that actors lose/destroy themselves in or as result of a role. Surely some do, but most don't.
Those actors who I most admire are the ones most capable of disappearing into their role....like virtually everyone in 'The Wire'. I would like to see some of our most ardent commentators/critics attempt acting.
I would imagine that the same qualities that support all creative talents, make them somewhat more susceptible to depression, drug abuse and suicide. It is a real bitch to 'see' in this world. While others, those who consume but never really understand either the [creative] process nor the fruits thereof, never get it....never see or understand anything outside themselves.
I think that the way we treat/worship celebrity takes a toll on those we can't leave alone.

...that there won't be a 2nd Borat. I wonder if that character is any more or less difficult to inhabit than the Joker?

I read that Cohen's abandoned the Borat character because he just couldn't 'step away' from it any more. Not to mention his uncontrollable urges about goats when he hears balalaika music.
Being Irish, he had an abiding sense of tragedy, which sustained him through temporary periods of joy - WB Yeats

Don't forget Nicholson as the devil in "Eastwick". I think Jack's mono-dimensionalism saves him from his parts. He's pretty much Jack-o no matter what he does..

more of a "personality" than a true actor....a real actor gets into the "soul" of the character and embodies it in a way that makes you forget that you are watching that person portray a character....A few people that have been able to do that for me are Tracy, DeNiro and Day-Lewis all with some consistency....As an example...Day-Lewis in Gangs Of New York.....the first time I saw that film....I totally forgot who was playing the role....I hated that character soooo much I clapped when he ultimately died...Such is the effect of an actor's ability to lose himself in the role and make you "feel" the emotions associated with it......
