I was blown away by Spirited Away. Apparently this is a well-known film, so I wonder why I'd never heard of it until recently. I found it amazing. No doubt the curmudgeons on this board will feel otherwise, but I thought it was excellent.

One reason I enjoyed this movie is that the animation apparently isn't computer generated. For some reason I don't care for computer animation or computer special effects. Why? Well, to me it looks like you are watching something on, guess what, a computer with only a very poor illusion of reality. I love horror/scifi flicks, but to my disappointment, most of the recent ones that have computer generated zombies and other assorted monsters do nothing for me.Anyhow, thanks for all the responses and none of the pompous, wet blanket curmudgeions showed up.
And yes it is rather famous, especially after it won a well deserved Academy Award. (Occassionally even Oscar gets it right.)
I must agree with the other posters, this Miyazaki's other famous Studio Ghibli films - Howl's Moving Castle and My Neighbor Totoro - are also must sees.
I'm not a huge fan of anime but I am a huge fan Miyazaki.
Another anime rec is Grave Of The Fireflies.
Don't worry about the curmudgeons.
...and I second the Triplets of Belleville and also Princess Mononoke.
Lots of really good stuff in recent years - just very good movies from outstanding filmmakers. We're in another golden age.
Incredibles
Ratatouille
Triplets Of Bellville
Persepolis
Spirited Away
Howl's Moving Castle
not to mention...
Wallace & Gromit Curse of the Wererabbit
Princess Mononoke and Grave of the Fireflies aren't recent but stand up well. Iron Giant is another favorite of mine from Brad Bird (Incredibles and Ratatouille).

...in the theater at the time it was released. It is pretty amazing.
One of my 17 year old daughter's favorite films is his "My Neighbor Totoro" which I picked up on Ebert's recommendation many years ago. Dakota Fanning does one of the girl's voices.
in Kichijoji, and walk my dog by the Ghibli Museum in Mitaka
*Edit: *lived*, just seen the studio moved to Koganei in 2005**There is a festival here every year where kids dress up as there favorite manga character, it's quite an event
Osamu Tetsuka ( Atom Boy, Iron Man ) has an amazing museum dedicated to him in Osaka; he's considered the founder of modern anime

I wish more people appreciated Japanese Anime'. Style and substance rolled into one.

One of the few films I have seen many times and still love.Have you seen Howl's Moving Castle or My Neighbor Totoro? I think I like them more than my children do.
I haven't seen any of the other films by this director, but certainly plan to. Thanks.
A few Miyazaki titles not mentioned, "Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind" and "Castle in the Sky". Both I felt were as emotionally charged as his award winning Spirited away. A couple of lighter, milder options - "Kiki's Delivery Service" and "Whisper of the Heart". I always say yes when my kids want to watch Miyazaki. Sometimes, my nine year old wants to see it to "hear" it. The sound tracks are exceptional as well.
Overall, one of the best I've seen.
