That deputy is really bad. Tommy Lee Jones is so good at hangdog determined sheriff, my favorite line is "Gun out and up".
But that deputy is over the top.

Woody looks a tad too young to be VN vet Colonel, doesn't he? Yep. But, I actually liked his character especially in the light that he knew he was screwed the second Javier got the drop on him.

  to his right. Or in desperation, if you're gonna get shot jump backward covering the back of your head. By the way, what kind of device would Javier have needed to rapid fire the balls out of that device in the hijack the truck scene?
  And without rifling for spin they would have no accuracy at all.

        James Brolin's kid hijacks the truck of a guy driving down the street of whatever city that is, and tells him he is not going to hurt him, he just needs him to drive and BOOM, BOOM < about 6-8 ball bearings go flying through the windshields and the innocent truck owner (who does not get a speaking line credit!!!). Also Javier shoots Woody with a bullet from the air gun. And the air gun shoots multiple bullets at Brolin as he leaves the seedy hotel right before the truck jacking, and when Javier breaks into the Mexicans room, I think. Or is that a shotgun.??

        Underrated movie IMHO. I can't imagine annyone else playing Garp after seeing Williams' portrayal.

        thoughtful. Williams was fidgety and terse. We used to try and name actors who would have been better, but at the time there weren't any clear improvements. Jon Voigt was one named.

        Still think RW was the man. Maybe not the perfect characterization, re the book, but still believable in what I thought was going to be an impossible task, translatiung the book to the big screen. YMMV
