...I'm a straight guy but couldn't conceivably care less about masculinity or whether I'm masculine or not. To me it's an utterly outdated concept, even though biologically based in many respects. I'd just about consider any other topic in the world before that one, Iron John notwithstanding.

I think he was a victim of one too many plastic surgery face lift operations on his face. In the early 1990's when he portrayed the Captain of a submarine his face looked like was in a flight simulator pulling 7 G's. He was a very good actor, "We need a bigger boat" (from the movie Jaws). John
I just finished watching "The French Connection" again. Repeats of "The Seven-Ups" and "Marathon Man" just previously. He was a real pro.
With not the greatest range as a character actor, he had, as you say, a real magnetism. Even in the ordinary "...Seven-Ups" he alone made it watchable and enjoyable.
I especially remember "All That Jazz". There he really transcended his noble everyman assignment.
He's not all that dead if we can still watch him onscreen.

Besides the obvious Jaws, he was super in The Sorcerrer and All That Jazz and in his small role in Marathon Man.
