2006, Won Cannes Golden Palm Award and an Oscar for costumn design. If you like period pieces in film, this one is entertaining. If you have ever visited Versailles, this film is a must to see. About the entire film was done in the rooms and gardens of Versailles. It's exciting to see a scene where you were standing, like the fountains, courts and Marie Antoinette's bedroom. However, it has that stiffling feeling of being smuthered in too much perfect beauty. Her life must have been very boring. You can understand why she probably had no idea how the French population lived or suffered.
The ending could have shown her inprisonment and beheading, but no, they just couldn't do it, -instead the ending shows their escape from Versaille, slowly in the sunset. They want to make you feel good to the very end.
I'm having difficulty finding good films on NETFLEX but this one is worth about ****. I am open for some good recommended films.
Follow Ups:
My wife and I were both left cold by this film. It seemed very hollow. Problem may be our tendency to compare all films depicting Europe around this time with Barry Lyndon, which we both love. Most other films fall way short.
it started out fine (pretty good really) but turned into a joke by the end I just did not care about any of them in the end of the film
Not to mention the trainers in one of those wardrobe pans.
Filming it as a high school flick was an OK idea, but I really thought it had been left on the back burner too long and it resembled a dried up mess.
The trailer was far better than the film.
But I enjoyed Versailles, since I was there and know how beutiful and Overdone it is. The setting itself is stiffling as the whole French upper class obviously must have been.
were gorgeous, basically went topless, and had the morals of Paris Hilton on a bad night.
The wines were today's quality. The food? Escoffier wasn't bad... You think Versailles was nice? Louis had a finance minister that built a palace, which Versailles was supposed to blow-away, that so incensed the Monarch because of grandeur that he had the poor fellow arrested and killed.
