Just bought the DVD. I sort of figured it'd be a real amateurish low budget snoozer, but it wasn't. I really enjoyed it. They kept the monster a mystery until the end. In fact, in the very last shot, you see where the monster came from.
The commentary was interesting. With a handheld camera, or a simulated handheld at times, it made adding the digital special effects very challenging. Nice job with a virtually unknown cast. It goes to show you, the big stars are just lucky. The three Easter eggs are bizarre.
The film cost 25M to produce, and grossed 42M the first weekend. Yep, there's a sequel in the works.
To keep the film's content a secret, the casting was done with phony scripts. One actress went with it just because the producers were those of the "Lost" show. She hated the movie when she found out what it was, an action film. She got beat up and injured during the filming and hated it. It showed up in her performance, very bitter and sarcastic. Fortunately her character got killed so there's no worry of trying to lure her back.

This film's premise seemd to be "OK; we have budget for a hour of CGI...what do we do with it?". The monster and the destruction of Lower Manhatten were technically superb. Thats about all it had for me. The hand-held video technique had its value, but became really tiresome and made it a real chore to watch. Several scenes were closely copied from 9/11 events and footage, and I'm not sure how I feel about that. The party scene was interminable; five minutes would have been plenty to set things up. The subplot and characters were the std group of vapid under-30s with issues, ie, no real story. Putting this weak tripe in direct competition with a monster destroying NYC was dopey. This film just dumps the audience into a situation with no explanation and skimpy resolution. Its like starting a book in the middle and not reading the last chapter. Instead of the cinematic experiment, I'd have saved the great CGI until finding a complete story, an interesting script with characters, and direction by someone who didn't have ADD.
As the guy who jumped off the 20-story building shouted as he passed the 10th Floor "So far..so good!"
All it was interested in was killing and maybe eating.
I listened to the commentary on this movie. They said it was a "child" monster that was sort of unintentionally getting into trouble, though I didn't pick up on that viewing the movie for the first time.
Either an intelligent race sent this to soften us up, or it has intelligent parents, or who knows? Good point of yours though, the creature is hardly capable of producing interstellar drive mechanisms.

My post heading was misleading. I meant to say it was surprisingly good compared to the low budget amateurish dreg I was expecting. Overall, an average flick, with kudos for being done so nicely on a limited 25 million budget.

I didn't really care for this from what I saw. I thought all of the kids in it were amazingly annoying and after about 15 minutes, I was hoping they would all die horribly and painfully. Thankfully, I nodded out after about 20 minutes.

I like the mystery around this movie, I think the trailers were well done in that regard.
Killed off the one you didn't like, excellent. :)
Will see it soon.

My movie tastes aren't really this pedestrian. I have a couple dozen nice film noir's I'll write reviews for when the mood strikes. I seem to be in "white trash" mode lately.
Good point about the mysterious trailers. I was desperate to see the movie after the first limited trailers. I remember back when Independence Day was first advertised. Minimal trailers showing just enough to really peak your interest. Then, as the opening day approached, more revealing trailers were shown. They should have kept to the minimalist approach.
