Just watched this after last seeing it almost 30 years ago.
Its more timely now than when it was first released.
Sellers is incredibly subtle.
One of my Top 5.

Love "Being There"! Leonard Maltin gives it **1/2, which is way under rated IMO.
I'd say it's his best, but as was mentioned below there's "Strangelove", which is phenomenal. I also think his performance in "Lolita" makes the film.
Rod
Being There was one of his best, but dont forget Dr. Strangelove. Three more great performances.
... goes into some detail about Sellers fondness for the project. It's really kind of a serious roll for him. I have been meaning to see it again.
My sister who is 12 years older than me were talking a few years ago about movies and she asked my favorite. I said Being There and she said me too. Hal Ashby is a genius! He also did Coming Home,Shampoo, The Last Detail, Harold And Maude and The Landlord.
So many great lines in Being There....
Servant: Would you like a car sir?
Chance: Oh yes I would like a car!
It arrives and Chance stands there and looks at it.
Russian Diplomat:(played by Richard Basehart) Chauncy I feel we are so close!
Chance: (sitting next to him at a table) Yes are hands are almost touching.
Of course there are many others................like:
Louise: all you gotta be in white in America to get ahead........
There are several reasons I like this movie including it was shot in DC where I'm from and at the Biltmore Estate which I love.

Ah yes, its been a while. I knew it didn't sound right. Time to watch it again.........
ET
.. beautifully portrayed and great understated performances all round. The scene when he he is passing on the message for Rafael is hilarious.
Not exactly subtle tho. Good secondary characters as well. He played the best "duck out of water" character ever.
"Allowing the very wealthy to keep their excessive wealth and have it trickle down to others will not work."
So, take their money, go DEMS!!!!!
.
the toilet paper scene in The Party was pretty subtle....
;-)
Loved The Party, too.
Silly, dated, and great, great fun
