...is finished, it was announced yesterday.
Pulitzer Prize winning film critic, Roger Ebert, has been under treatment for recurring throat cancer for the past 2 years and is still unable to talk. He announced he would not be coming back.
Roeper said he is tired of it and will be leaving, too.
Follow Ups:
just to see. This format has been done poorly in the past, if it is done poorly, I will stop watching.
I also watched Siskel and Ebert since PBS. I have learned about more new movies from them than from any other single source. With the Internet now, of course, it is easy to find out what's opening in New York and get reviews, etc., but the half hour show with clips went down easy.
I never liked Roeper too much as a critic, but many of his temporary partners were great- A.O. Scott and others.
The sad part about this is the cancer...watching Siskel sicken and hear of his death, watching Ebert sicken and now his voice is gone, his TV days are over...it's a shame, beyond the TV show.
...I, too, began watching them on PBS.
I don't watch much TV but I tried to catch them every week.
Can't imagine the new guys will be able to hold a candle to the originals. Many film review shows have attempted to copy them and failed.
I grew up in Chicago and remember Gene Siskel's somewhat amaturish and always hilarious movie reviews on the news before there was At the Movies. (This was back when Bill Curtis was still wet behind the ears). I've got the tribute show that Roger did for him after his death on dvd. Great stuff.
Two new critics have been hired by Disney
...did they...
Count me out...yawn.
...the new format they wanted to introduce, and Ebert followed.
Just kidding. But the original two were magic, Siskel more so. How sad that a random infection took him down so fast.
We'll have to agree to disagree about human caused global warming until the next global cooling scare comes along.

.
I really feel for the guy.
...it was cancer of the salivary gland and appears to have been stopped at least for now. His ongoing problems are offshoots of the "mechanical" effects of his cancer surgery. Both Roeper and Ebert have indicated an interest in future programming, although it's unclear if they'd work together and what role Ebert could have if he doesn't get his voice back. Maybe something behind the scenes.
...last show will be 8/16-17.
...on the Sun Times page that Ebert might have something else afoot. It also seemed that it was Disney that wanted to pull the plug as well.
.
Baba-Booey to you all!
I wish Ebert all the best, it sounds bad...
thanks
Phil
I wish him the best in his courageous fight against a truly horrible form of cancer that would destroy the dignity of many.
As the guy who jumped off the 20-story building shouted as he passed the 10th Floor "So far..so good!"
...you can read many of his reviews on line.He may still be writing them for the Sun Times
For example, read his take on Jesse James from last year.
...there's no reason at all to watch it, if there ever was. I have no interest in Roeper's opinions whatsoever.
It was viable as Siskel and Ebert, but the show never really recovered from losing Siskel.
No more from the balcony.
At the website Roger has a farewell statement and I think it poignant that the statement is headed by a picture of himself with Gene Siskel. In a way I don't think Roger ever recovered from the death of Gene.

I thought he had a lot of fun interviewing replacements by letting them try to fill Gene's seat.
After Roeper started I emailed him about what I thought was a poor choice. He sent me back a nice response asking me to give Roeper time.
I don't think the show ever recovered from Gene's death.
