THis is the first of a proposed three part look at the life of Genghis Khan and takrs us from his childhood to the moment he unites the Mongol nation.Even at 2 hours it jumps at times through some quite big time spans and some parts are a bit rushed past.
BUT... it is a BIG film.
Like many films set in Mongolia, there are a lot... A LOT... of scenes of riding endlessly across the most beautiful landscapes.
The photography is marvelous and the effects during battle scenes owe, in my opinion, quite something to graphic novels. In fact at one point it reminded me of 300.
The brutality of both the landscape and the life is brought home HARD.
I would have preferred more detail of certain parts and certainly about his wife and what she has to do to make things happen and to hold the family together, but these areas apart, I give this a BIG thumbs up.
And do see it on a big screen, just a TV won't probably be big enough.
Follow Ups:
I saw this about a month ago at the local "artsy" theater (Angelika), and thoroughly enjoyed it.
American directors seem incapable of making a movie of this scope (at least MOST American directors).
My understanding is that a trilogy was originally proposed, but I think I read somewhere on the Internet that a "two-parter" is more likely. It may all depend on how well this movie does at the box office.
Word is getting around. Not blockbuster type crowds, but real solid for a 1:40 Sunday showing.

I don't see it listed at www.amazon.com.

Damn good. The cinematography was outstanding. This might be a 3 parter? I'm definitely looking forward to parts II & III if so. I was going to research his life a bit on the net. Might not now so Parts II&III will hold as much surprise for me as this one did.
