Overlong, but as you say, an adult film, not a comic book-more gravitas than any other film adapted from a comic source. Ledger was amazing-it'll be a shame if/when people say the inevitable Oscar is a sympathy vote.
The transformation of Harvey Dent was over the top and too sudden to take seriously, but it was pivotal to the story. I'd give it an 8.5 on a scale of 1-10.
Follow Ups:
...I was grateful they didn't split the film into two, rather deciding to flesh out the points they did.Not too bad for an adult comic book story - a fantastic look into the mind of terror, humanity overcoming the anihilation paradox, what spawns evil acts, etc. etc.
For me, "Dark Knight" out did "Begins", but had me grumbling at the conclusion that symbolic perception outweighs the simple truth - as if people "can't handle the truth" (A Few Good Men).
Untruth is distortion, and distortions obscure otherwise good reason. Don't blame solution for the problem.
Ledger was mesmerizing. "Dr. Phibes" (make-up) was distracting.
1) It was waaaaaay overlong . . . I think about 30-40 minutes too long.
2) And I couldn't agree w/ you more on the Harvey Dent plot line. And it special effects of his damaged face seemed directly "borrowed" form the terminator movies.
Ledger . . . what a incredible performance.
