the story of an assassin ordered to kill the prominent Communist national. The entire action is telescoped into one day, the final day of WWII as Poland was reeling from the viciousness both of the German and the "liberating" Russian troops.
Wajda shows a brilliant technique, using the rather common story line to trace not a few similarities to "Hamlet."
The lead actor gives an edgy, innovative (for the time) performance, bringing to mind the intensity (not to mention the haircut and dark glasses) of James Dean.
This, justly, makes many critics' "Best 100" lists.
Follow Ups:
Saw it several times in my life, it was from time to time shown on Soviet TV. An excellent film.
The actor died young, fell under the train trying to catch it. He was incredibly popular both in Poland and Russia.

trilogy, having seen "Kanal," also.
Now, about Satantango.....
I looked it up... I will save it for future, more joyful times. Right now the TV comedy series rule the landscape!
And I have to tell ya... I have been totally dismissive of them... some turn out to be quite witty and enjoyable!
Some time ago we finished the complete Friends, and now I miss it!

"30 Rock" and "Arrested Development" (the latter being unique and an instant classic) are pretty darn funny.
"I looked the man in the eye. I found him to be very straightforward and trustworthy….I was able to get a sense of his soul." -- George W. Bush on Vladimir Putin
Noted, thank you!

you enjoy the British sense of humor.
The "Carry On" series of Brit films from, I believe, the fifties and early sixties are very, very good.
Yes, we tried some, but for some reason they didn't go. Not the language, where we cheat by turning the subtitles on :), but we found much of it ho-hum, with small islands of good humor. Plus there was too much slapstick. So we decided it was not worth our time.
We watched the whole The Office series, and unfortunately the characters were so one-dimensional, their development fit into one episode... we also are currently watching the American version, and surprisingly, there is more depth to it... within the narrow confines of shallow waters, of course...
At any rate... good laughs are great for times of stress... who would guess?

I can imagine the cause of the stress.
I am not a prayerful person but my family's best wishes go out to your family.
Happiness is the best medicine.
Part of Wadja's trilogy. The other two being "My Generation" and "Kanal".
For me, "Kanal" is one of the most harrowing war films ever made. Most of it takes place in the sewers of Warsaw with nazi's persuing resistance fighters.
A must see!
sewers of Warsaw.
I can't tell if you saw "A & D?"
