A twisted tale of a young couple who allow two well dressed polite young men into their home, with the men quickly showing they are homicidal maniacs who enjoy cat and mouse. The film plays with the viewer, with one evil intruder talking to the camera twice. And the film showing you one hopeful ending, only for it to be undone by the film rewinding itself!! Very scary, very suspenseful, and proof of the survival rule, "Do not let them tie you up, no matter what. When you see the duct tape, fight to the death if you have to but do not allow yourself to be tied up". I hope you never need to know that rule.
Follow Ups:
The 2 bad guys had the same personality.
People used to gripe that the two good guys, Cosby and Culp had the same glib lines, that they were the same character. The two bad guys here are two pisses in a pot. Poor movie.

compare it for us.
Unlike the Dutch director that remade--- horrendously so--- his classic, "The Vanishing," this director is supposed closely to have adhered to the original.
Myself, it's such a bleak, terrifying film I think once was enough.
made ten years earlier. They looked to have the same scenes blocked very closely. Kind of cheating much like the Japanese horror remakes. To me, the American actors looked more German than the German ones--notice how un-American they looked? (It was filmed in the USA and the villians were American actors.
I found this movie painful to watch and was wondering what kind of 'lucky shot' broke Roth's leg with a single swipe of a driver.
And as you say, I did not bother with the American version.
