It is quite closely based on the life of the principal actor whose performance shows you that truth and most acting have little in common.
A man born into an international family in Bolivia comes to manhood in war-torn Chile, then becomes in turn a journalist, spy, and military commando, drawn to the hot-spots of the world. This film combines documentary and fiction to create a far more realistic picture of revolution and war than any other. Amazingly, the film goes on location to all the countries portrayed, including Hungary, Bolivia, Croatia, Israel, and several others.
Seeing the tragedies and torments of this man's life makes one's own seem almost empty: he is quick to put his life on the line many times in a passion born and driven by his strong religious upbringing.
If you enjoyed any of the recent series of political thrillers, i.e. "Babel," "The Constant Gardener," "Syriana," you definitely will very much appreciate this far superior film. I can only think of Antonioni's, "The Passenger," with which to compare this very disturbing, haunting film.

Tin, have you seen John Sayles "Men with Guns" ? Another great film no-ones ever seen...

few political masterpieces. Overall, it's as good a film as, "Lone Star," and that's saying a lot, to me!
And he's one of the few truly independent filmmakers.
Unlike most directors who are produced though indie majors, Sayles and Maggie Rienzi, his long time partner and SO, get outside financing for each film they make, so that they are beholden to no studio.
He's had a few misfires, but he's always interesting. I also recommend his Matewan as a fine political film.
I saw Men With Guns in the theater, and agree it's not only one of Sayle's best, it's one of the best political flms ever made. I'd agree about The Passenger too, so I guess I'll have to hunt down Chico.
My favorite Sayles, BTW, is probably Lone Star, which is fersher a comment on US racial politics. Sunshine State is not as good as these two but worth a watch, Silver City was kind of a glorious mess. In light of the recent election, I would be interested to see the estimable Brother From Another Planet again.
I have a soft spot for Eight Men Out - it was shot in my hometown and I'm in it. :-)

it has been there for months, and at this time it has "unknown" next to it, meaning not in my lifetime (as a early baby boomer) . . .
Perhaps it will be available to my 23-year-old son.
and is a great film
The Texas Mayor who can't remember the name of their local Gulf War hero ( Rubin Santiago ) even tho' all the Counties street names are in Spanish + most of the population
The barman who suggests the (earlier) sheriff would have asked the mixed-race couple to leave the Bar "as a kind of a safety tip"
Brilliant stuff
