Rented this film by Billy Ray, mainly because of Chris Cooper who always turns in a superb performance.
Based on a true story, (with Eric O'Neil credited with supplying info for the film), it tells of top FBI agent Robert Hanssen (Cooper) being slowly caught out after selling secrets to the Soviets for 22 years.
Ryan Phillipe as Eric O'Neil gives perfect support to Cooper.
Cooper once again gives a magistral performance in this well-paced, sombre spy story and I'm wondering if Cooper might not be America's finest actor, if not the most underrated?
Follow Ups:
...begs the question: what really drives moles to sacrifice themselves? Other moles?
Great film all too easily overlooked.
I don't think he's a particularly strong actor, plus he looks likes he's about 18 yeras old.
.
where he let his freak flag fly!
If you want to see something new of his try Married Life. A nice little thriller with Pierce Brosnan, Patricia Clarkson and Rachel McAdams.
thanks

I have yet to see a good dramatic role that was improved by an actor taking off their pants.
We're chasing terrorists in the wrong place...they're on Wall St.
...my brother and sister-in-law lived near the Hansens and their kids all went to the same school together.
She said she always wondered how they were able to afford the cars, house, clothes and jewelry she saw.
one of his best.

My old boss in the 12V industry (Hurleys, Tysons Corner,VA.) said Hanssen brought in a Taurus for antenna replacement. It was a couple of months before he got nabbed. I wonder if that was because of the GPS "burst" interference they talked about in the movie. I liked the film overall and always like "local" films and spotting landmarks.

Chris Coppeer gives an understated performance and Ryan Phillipe is good too
I agree CC is underrated and largly unnoticed, he is so chameleon like
:^)
thanks
