Try his "Gospel According to St. Matthew." Or "Accatone." Or "Mamma Roma." "Oedipus."
Few directors have been able to match him, when he was at his best.

I would choose now his best as Accatone.
Now.
" Mieux vaut une tête bien faite qu'une tête bien pleine."
..
a petty criminal told in almost documentary fashion.
Or of the tough as nails whore, "Mamma Rosa," whose story has no sentimentality or sensationalism, just humanism.
I like his treatment, also, of the Greeks, "Medea," and "Oedipus." The latter, especially, is terrific with unforgettable cinematography.
Without a doubt, you'd also be amazed at his, "St. Matthew," easily the best depiction of Christ ever attempted on film.
