It's entertaining, Cruise obviously was reined in hard by the director and the ensemble of actors is superb. Not a classic but not a "raspberry," by a long shot. There is a dearth of grown-up fare this season, so far, and if you're in the mood for some Nazi bashing, hey, you could do worse.
One problem, of course, is that it's hard to exalt those that tried to do something without making it seem like you're excusing the vast majority which were quite okay with all the Nazi atrocities.
Follow Ups:
it doesn't seem like the Valkyrie plotters were trying to kill Hitler because he was murderous madman authorizing the worst imaginable atrocities... they were doing it because they didn't want their army and country destroyed. Not exactly the most noble reasons under the circumstances.
"The man is only half himself, the other half is his expression." -- Ralph Waldo Emerson
one guy with a derringer and the cajones to put it to Hitler's head. Or.... a Palestinian type courage to get next to Adolph and then hit the detonator.
Gosh that was stupid, even for you.
The bottom line is that cruise lacks the chops to play any man of conviction or authority and even if he did there are literally millions of stories from WWII that are more important to tell than this one. Hopefully Daniel Craig will show you how it's done on January 16th.
-------------Call it, friendo.
How about a list of WWII stories which could be put into an interesting movie for our edification/entertainment ?
