Ruined by a bad TV set, or a bad sounding stereo?
A good yes.
An excellent, hardly!
Follow Ups:
I remember seeing The English Patient for the first time on the back of someone's seat on an aeroplane with uncomfortable stethoscope earphones and being totally engaged. The second time, in a theatre with Dolby whatever, the spectacle was certainly greater (as in Wow!) but the impact of the narrative was much the same.
I doubt whether Lawrence of Arabia - a lesser film, in my book - would work as well under arduous conditions! But David Lean's Dr Zhivago worked for me on a small TV set in a hotel room. Would 2001 A Space Odyssey?
I suppose it's a matter of whether a particular film's excellence resides primarily in its narrative or its visuals or even soundtrack?
A film should be sees as intend from the director, no more no less.
I remember reading that Elvis Presley used to like listening to his records on a cheap portable record player in the 50's as that's how his fans would hear him.
Certainly to some degree. They don't have the same emotional impact with bad sound.
