Surprising to me, since it isn't your typical crowd pleaser.

"Last Summer" a year later, which stars a young ( + beautiful ) Barbara HersheyWhile I found "The Swimmer" on VHS easilly enough, "Last Summer" I've never been able to find on any format until I did a websearch today + see it's downloadable off the Net + only since last month ( ! )
Interesting that Ebert considers "The Swimmer" to be Lancasters finest role; it's a tough call as he never made a bad film, but I'm inclined to agree, no-one else could have played Ned Merrill with such a mixture of wide-eyed optimism, sincerity + tragedy
Lancasters performance transforms what could have been a average + forgettable film into a masterpieceGW

I liked him a lot in "Sweet Smell of Success," "Come Back Little Sheba," "Atlantic City" . . .
he always was good but, for me, a bit too earnest; you could see the acting.
I liked him ever since when a kid I saw him in "Jim Thorpe."

I always remember the scene with all the Chamber pots in the room as far as the eye could see-Ha!
Des
type works in smaller roles. I kept picturing him in tights.
