Anyone caught this one yet? It's a nice piece of film-making, about an American bomb disposal squad in Iraq.Acc to Rotten Tomatoes: "A well-acted, intensely shot, action filled war epic, Kathryn Bigelow's The Hurt Locker is thus far the best of the recent dramatizations of the Iraq War."
The "tomato meter" rating is an almost unheard of 97% (93 fresh; 3 rotten). Of course, YMMV. Caveat emptor. I think it is one of the better movies I have seen this year (along w/ Sin Nombre [I liked Gomorrah as well, but you talk about dark!]).
There is some over-the-top stuff, but what do you expect with a group of guys who cheat death daily? Very intense and interesting.
I especially liked the snipper sequence. It's not simply "one and you're done" (i.e., snippers don't always hit their target with the first shot).

...well done - an excellent film.
Unusually realistic and well directed.
Very intense - you can imagine what those guys must go through and how difficult occupying a foreign country must be.
The downtime with the boredom, drinking and male bonding.
Insight into the main characters - I imagine there are a lot like those two.
Highly recommended.
it seems to have an almost documentary feel, but it could not actually have been filmed in Iraq. However they did it, there was an amazing transport into this strange war zone, where everybody looking from every window might be a sniper or bomber or just a regular civilian. Lots of gripping suspense, with bomb squad as the subject, but somehow more real than the usual bombs about to explode on 24. No real plot, no real characterization, but the atmosphere and suspense carry you through.
it was filmed in Jordan.

All my friends were watching Monty Python back then, for me it was Danger UXB
A great film from a very good director (Strange Days is a favorite) - one of the better war films of recent years.
man was I pumped after reading the review. I went to the one in Plano, asked for a ticket, and was told it's only showing at Mockingbird Station, grrrrrrr. bad on me for not looking at the listings closer. I'll not be making that mistake this weekend.
Yeah, you got to haul down to the Dallas location for this one (did I see an ad that said it was opening nationwide on 7/24/09???). But it's worth the trip.
The one knock I have on the Plano location is that they don't have as many screens as the Dallas location, so the selection is limited. Nonetheless, it's great to have these two "arthouse" theaters (along w/ the Magnolia and Inwood) to offer different fare than AMC and Cinemark. Let me know what you think of The Hurt Locker!
