I firmly believe this is a classic.
Now, whether or not the director can make another feature anywhere near this quality is unknown: he hasn't made another film in the intervening years.

Usually doesn't work for me. There are clearly some cultural issues I don't have any reference for. Outside of "My Sassy Girl" and "My Wife is a Gangster", I really haven't liked many Korean comedies. There a lot of humor in their serious and semi-serious movies I don't get either. This movie has been around for a while, I passed on it.

  I think that's the key to Korean comedy: it's very dark; there's almost always a foreboding, a sense of disaster. I imagine having a lunatic leading the country right next door may have something to do with it? Actually, it's not that far off from the Russian or Slavic sense though it's less fatalistic and depressing.

    Yes, Korean comedy is dark. Not news. Most Korean movies are dark. Even in their romantic comedies the people tend to die. Horribly. That's not the point. Much of it is simply based on Korean culture. I didn't appreciate the comedy in The Host, And I didn't even recognize it in Welcome to Dongmakgol (that had to be explained to me by a Korean), to name a few off the top of my head that you may know.

        Its an anti-war movie. Very well done, with some light hearted moments, but the main female lead speaks in an accent that makes fun of a specific region in Korea (so I was told). Apparently, some Koreans found that hilarious.
