I'd argue he was a magnificently talented actor who portrayed a variety of characters, though many of them were intense. After all, what did the characters in "High Sierra," "The Big Sleep," "The Caine Mutiny,"" In a Lonely Place,"" Casablanca," or "The African Queen" have in common?
Early in his career, Bogie portrayed criminals, many of them vicious killers. Throughout his later career, he tried to erase that stereotype.
The most amazing component of his talent was his pantomime skill: he could convey any emotion with his eyes, face, and body language. His mouth alone had more talent than many stars entire bodies: it could sneer, scowl, grimace, and smile with more nuances than any other performer.
Hero, lover, hoodlum, cynic, cold-blooded killer, maniac, gold-hearted softy----- any one of these broad categories has a Bogie performance which is a standard.
Can we say that about any "star?"
Bogie, like Bette Davis, had immense star power but, inside that brilliance, there was unsurpassed talent.
Follow Ups:
With virtually any political or Religious issue, but am forced to give you a good slap on the back for bringing up the unequaled Bogie. I'll be picking up a few more of his masterpieces.
We'll have to agree to disagree about global warming until the next global cooling scare comes along
And a man with guts, yes!
And it seems to have drunk far too much.
Wilder complained on the set of Sabrina..

But one should ask all questions, is it not?
As Brando over played it ( that it why he was so good at the Freshman ) Bogard had a limited facies expression, look for his mimic on we are no angels and on African queeen.
That and a lot more.
I love him very much but what is is.
Agreed. John Wayne, Eastwood etc were great at what they did, but could they have played Hamlet convincingly?
Lawrence Olivier COULD have played any of Bogart's, Eastwoods or Wayne's roles extremely competently, and may have even been nominated for the Oscars many feel the aforementioned deserved, but for me he didn't have the star quality and charisma to match his undoubted acting talent.
Horses for courses.
Best Regards,
Chris redmond.
I see your point for Olivier, he felt short. Very short.

“ The man that hath no music in himself, Nor is not moved with concord of sweet sounds, Is fit for treasons, stratagems, and spoils; The motions of his spirit are dull as the night... Let no such man be trusted. Mark the music ” - William Shakespeare
He was both.
He played against Bette Davis and Cagney in a couple of his most important early movies and was probably the only actor with enough moxie and charisma to steal scenes from them. Hard to do considering their towering screen presence and personalities.
"Iconic" is certainly overused but all three of the actors I've mentioned here certainly qualify for that moniker.
I recently rewatched "Sabrina" which was made late in Bogie's career. He was too old for the character he was playing yet totally effective. The modern remake is a good film but cannot hold a candle to the original. How could it when the original had Humphrey Bogart and Audrey Hepburn in the title roles while the remake, which was a good effort, did not?
In my view.
It was, and on reflection feel I gave it too much credit, but it was a better film than most of the other so-called comedy-romances (romantic comedies?) of the past few years. Most modern 'comedies' and 'romances' might as well have been written by a computer, and I have scant evidence that some were not. They are painfully unfunny and derivative and badly acted. I was at least able to sit through a showing of "Sabrina"; something I can't say about too many movies these days. I wanted to kill myself about halfway through "National Treasure II" and will someone please tell me why Vince Vaughn continues to make movies?!?
To be sure that it was ( for me ) I watch it twice, also because I like both actors.
The original Sabrina, also is at time a bit slow, but the actors are just great their you see the difference between yesterday and today, on the most.
