role, he was quite capable of carrying a film

"Dillinger" + "Bring me the Head of Alfredo Garcia" are two films that spring to mind

Oates even looked like John Dillinger + his anti-hero, Benny in "Head" is a masterpiece of acting

He's the main "character", as GTO, in "Two Lane Blacktop"

A shame he didn't get more lead roles + more movies ( ! )

...he couldn't carry a film. I said his BEST work was in support.
He would have been in more lead roles if he were a leading man. Most of his work was in support; ergo, he was at his best in support. Tell me why that's not so.
