This minor masterpiece of a film was on the other night and I found myself watching at after a few years and not just marveling at Gene Hackman's performance (it's extraordinary in its own right) but at the music. There are some truly sublime moments of great music in this movie. Listen specifically to the score during the party in the warehouse scene.

This film is 9.9/10 for me and my film expert GF. The audio/tape side of it just adds to the whole experience. Just love it. Gritty, subtle, as good as it gets.

And my favorite Coppola film.
Nice to see such love for it here. :-)
I saw it at 14 years old when it came out and have the DVD today. One of my top ten for sure.

I saw it at the base theater at Subic Bay. What I got from listening to those around me is that there was no middle ground with this movie. A few people really loved it and the rest seemed to think it dull and incomprehensible.
IMHO, it's one of the great films of the 70s and proof that a film does not need a huge budget to be a success. I'll bet it cost about 1/100 what Coppola spent on "Apocalypse Now."
This is the film that proved to me that Hackman is something special. He's been in a lot of not so good movies but when he's in something worthy of his talents he shines very brightly.
surrealistic quality to SF.
That area is difficult to recognize now in comparison.
But then so is Union Square, which has been remade.
“ The man that hath no music in himself, Nor is not moved with concord of sweet sounds, Is fit for treasons, stratagems, and spoils; The motions of his spirit are dull as the night... Let no such man be trusted. Mark the music ” - William Shakespeare
Agree on Hackman's performance and the music but the film has a dated feel to me. I thought it was much better 35 years ago.
One note, I had forgotten Gomer Pyle's firlfriend, Miss Lou Ann Poovie, had a major part in the film. It was difficult to get that out of my mind. :-)
